The New Scapegoats: Demonizing the Unvaccinated

Since the German government imposed the 2G rule, I have been busy with various things. Today, October the 4th 2021, was the first chance I had to walk around my city to see how things are.

It was a cloudy cold day as I stood in front of the main entrance of my apartment building. The rain was present but not strong. My Northface winter coat bought in Canada had a rating of -30 °C, so I thought I could handle the unfriendly weather and began my walk towards the center. Walk because as an unvaccinated person, I am no longer allowed to use public transportation without a corona-test; the nearest center being several km from where I live. Given that I am a healthy and fit guy, not taking the train is fine and will provide me with a better view of what is there under the rain.

My neighborhood is quiet with few businesses. As I make my way to the heart of the city, I see in the distance the neon lights being mirrored by the black mirror that the streets now are. To my left I see the first restaurant. On the door “2G“ and inside the vaccinated eating in a, to an owner nerving, not enough full restaurant. (2G stands for Geimpft = vaccinated and Genesen = recovered in German) One man locked eyes with me, no emotion from his side followed by the wall that pushed his face from my site as I moved on. Now the rain is stronger, but my jacket is waterproof and by me tested at -45 °C.

As I proceed closer to the center, more of the same. Restaurants that had people but seemed empty, as empty as the blank faces of the people I saw inside. It is at this point that I start to feel it – the immense exclusion that had been ruled against me in the past few weeks I was busy working. The people on the other side of the glass wall did not seem to be bothered; they ate and drank their beer and wine in enormous glasses.

Reaching the center I saw more people, Christmas lights and the places I once gathered with those I thought were my friends. Those fun locations now looked to me as mysterious as an abandoned factory. My life had changed and I did not even realize it. Those people inside, who are they? They are the vaccinated. Why were they inside? Because their likelihood of getting ill from the older variants of a virus that has now again mutated is supposed to be lower, this when ignoring that most of the people in critical condition from corona are in the risk-group and ignoring that I am not in the risk group. But there is more, we must go deeper. Who are we really dealing with? There are those who are unvaccinated and those who are vaccinated. Among the vaccinated we have those who support 2G and those who allow it; among those who allow it there are those who don’t care and those too afraid, for example of losing their jobs or friends, to speak against this. Their fear is keeping them from acting.

What the vaccinated all have in common is the unwritten agreement they have with the government – vaccinate yourself, allow us to punish the unvaccinated and pressure them into vaccinating and we will give you your freedom back. They accepted it and so long as they are comfortable, they will continue to allow the government to turn against the unvaccinated.

Here in Germany they are trying to push for mandatory vaccination and in Austria they have legally passed it. I can’t even begin to tell you how terrorizing this is. I have been very shaken up by this. As I look into the future, I see nothing but questions. The possibility of having to leave the life I have built behind, career, possessions, and so on turns my stomach.

I cannot go into any business, meet friends in restaurants, transportation is very difficult and have been generally pushed out of society. People who were friends no longer are as it is very difficult to be in friendly contact with someone who supports this. The return home was under the then heavy rain. Now I realize, my heavy duty coat is soaking wet. It can handle a lot but like all things, it has its limits and if I don’t get out of the rain, the cold rain will find its way inside.
